Gatkeepers come in many forms. Gatekeepers are alters who manage headspace and other alters. To my knowledge, there are 4 types. Memory, guard, dormancy, and front. All gatekeepers require a certain amount of power to do things. For some it takes little energy but for others their energy is used easily depending on the task, it depends on the alter and system.
